Unit 8 explains the different forms and usages of the future tenses in the English language. There are seven types of tenses with future meaning: 1) The Future Simple ? will + verb ? e.g. I will pick you up later. Used to indicate future facts; promises; predictions (w/o present evidence); unplanned decisions; assumptions/speculations and threats. 2) The Future Continuous ? will + be + verb + ing ? e.g. We will be waiting for you Used to indicate that something is in progress at a particular time in the future; to predict the present; for polite enquiries of someone else?s plans; to refer to future events which are fixed. 3) The Future Perfect ? will + have + past participle ? e.g. By next week, I will have worked here for 2 years. Used to indicate that something will have been done/completed/achieved by a certain time in the future. 4) The Future Perfect Continuous ? will + have + been + verb + ing ? e.g. By the end of the summer, I will have been living here for seven years. Used to indicate how long something will have continued by a certain time. 5) Be going + infinitive ? e.g. I am going to play football tomorrow. Used to indicate intentions; predictions based on present evidence; plans (decisions made before speaking). 6) The Present Simple ? e.g. The train leaves from platform 6 at 10am Used to indicate a more formal situation; timetables and schedules; to suggest a more impersonal tone. 7) The Present Continuous ? e.g. We are going on holiday in July. Used to indicate definite arrangements and decisions/plans without a time frame.
