Teach English in Donghai Jiedao - Shanwei Shi
This unit discusses the strengths and weaknesses of different teaching methodologies, as well as an effective teaching format called ESA (Engage, Study, Activate). There are several different teaching methods introduced, including grammar translation, task-based learning, audiolingualism and communicative language learning. Some of these seem to be more effective than others overall, while others seem to be appropriate depending on the age and language ability of students. For example, while grammar translation is a common teaching method, it is thought to be less effective in comparison with other methods because it focuses more on learning about the language rather than actually learning the language; audio-lingualism (repetition drilling) is not a useful teaching method for advanced students but is for beginning students. Understanding your students well is key to knowing which method should be used. The ESA teaching format is also introduced in this unit. Every class should begin by engaging your students so they feel motivated and comfortable in the classroom. This can be done by playing various language games; new content should not be taught in this portion of the lesson. After the Engage phase is the Study phase where new language content is introduced. A language presentation is given and then students can be given worksheets to test their understanding. Finally, the Activate phase is where students put the new language content to use by participating in role-plays, debates or communication games. The ESA format can be flexible so long as you begin with the Engage phase and end with the Activate phase.
