Over the course of this unit I had the opportunity to learn a good deal about adverbs, articles, as well as the various verb forms. In regards to the first, I was able to learn about the various types of adverbs such as those of frequency, manner, etc., something of which I previously had little, or no, knowledge of. Furthermore, I learned about their placement within the sentence; more specifically, how they are usually placed after the object of a transitive verb yet immediately after an intransitive one. Concerning articles, I learned a good deal about the numerous exceptions involved in the application of articles, particularly regarding geographical locations. I had never consciously realized for instance, that we do not include the article with a good deal of geographical locations yet do so with names of rivers, oceans, seas, points on the globe, geographical areas, and certain features such as forests, deserts, gulfs, and peninsulas. Finally, when it comes to verbs I was able to gain a firmer understanding of the four main verb forms and how they function. This was particularly true with the past participle form as the information provided in this unit provided the stimulus to grasp a firmer understanding of the function of the past participle. All of this new knowledge, I believe, will be extremely helpful in teaching English as a foreign language as it will not only allow me to explain a great deal more to students about English grammar, but to also instill a sense of confidence in my students about my ability to address grammatical matters in the English language, something of which I had previously lacked.
