In this unit we watch two different videos of the same English lesson. In lesson one we perceive the teacher as unfriendly, unorganized and intimidating, whereas in the second lesson the atmosphere is much more relaxed, the teacher has better planning and the students participate much more. From this unit I learnt how the attitude of the teacher can affect a lesson. We saw how in the first lesson the teacher didn't introduce himself or ask the students names, he did not appear engaging or interested. In the second lesson however he tells the class his name, and asks for theirs. In this way the class is started in a positive atmosphere. One important point I leant from the lesson was also that the level of vocabulary used by the teacher should be appropriate to the level of the class. In the first video the students looked confused, and obviously didn't understand much that had taken place in the class. In the second video the teacher used simpler words, and also used mime to help comprehension. Students seemed more at ease and participated more. The affect of feedback on the lessons was also noticeable. In the first lesson the teacher repeatedly said the language point was easy, and did not often respond in a positive manner when students attempted to answer a question. In the second lesson he praises the students who respond, and when a student tries to answer but gets it wrong he uses words like 'nearly' instead of negative feedback. To resume this lesson illustrated some very interested points, showed us some aspects to avoid in lessons, and also how to create a positive and beneficial atmosphere for language learning.
