Teach English in XiashAn Jiedao - Shantou Shi
In Unit 19, we learned the different types of students teachers may have and how to adapt to the different needs of each. When teaching beginners, I learned the importance of being patient and not overwhelming the students, as much of the material may be new. I learned about teaching individual students, something which I did not realize was an increasingly popular option. As there is a loss of classroom dynamic, it is important to be creative and create different activities with individual lessons. Unlike individual students, which are typically adults, children are a very different type of learner. I agree that children are able to pick up language more easily or quicker than adults. However, lesson planning for children is more involved as children can be sometimes unpredictable and need more instruction and variety. This lesson provided lots of helpful tips on what to do and not do in the classroom. In comparison to children, Business English/ESP students are typically adults or young adults, so lessons can be much different. The most important thing I learned about these types of students is that there will be a greater diversity in class due to ages, English proficiency, prior exposure, and complexities of their outside lives. Lastly, I learned that having multilingual classes may have benefits. As the only commonality between the students is the learning of English, it may encourage the students to use English more. However monolingual classes may work together better as they will experience similar problems. Either way, I learned the importance of not using the mother tongue in the classroom no matter the type of student.
