There are a number of ways to assess a student?s language level: 1. Tutorials- These can take place with the whole group or with individual students. Tutorials can consist of reviewing the work done at the end of the week, discussing the aims of the lessons, how well the students performed their task etc. 2. Evaluating by the students- This can be used to ask the students to evaluate their course by means of questionnaire or guided discussion. This process promotes genuine interaction, develops a much greater awareness among students of what is happening in the classroom and helps you understand better how they react to what they do. 3. Test- There are various tests that are used to determine the language competence of the student. Placement test are used to assist the assignment of students into the correct class according to their language ability. These test can be conducted by multiple choice or a spoken interview. Progress test are used to periodically gauge what language has been retained or forgotten. These tests are useful to let teachers and students know what language items need more work. Progress test should include a balance of all four skills ?reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as grammar and vocabulary. Diagnostic Tests are similar to placement test however, these tests are more intense as it helps the teacher to prepare lessons and materials that will enable students to work on areas of difficulty identified by the test. Practice test should follow the format of external examinations that they are being given in preparation for. Examples of external examinations include OEFL, IELTS, TOEIC ETC.
