The modal verbs are used before the main verb in a sentence and express different modalities, such as: obligation, possibility, probability, permission, prohibition, ability and advice. Different modal verbs express different degress of formality. The form of the verb doens't change and this applies to both the auxiliary and the main verb. The passive voice puts the agent of the verb at the end of he sentence, taking the agent out of foucs and making the object the focus of the sentence. As the agent is out of focus it is also possible to omit the agent. I learned in the section about relative clauses that there are defining and non-defining relative clauses. The difference between them is expressed in the absence or use of commas. If the relative clause has no commas surrounding it, it is a defining clause. If the relative clause is between commas it is non-defining. Phrasal verbs are verbs that contain a verb and one or two particles and operate as one item. There are three types: -intransitive (cannot be followed by a direct object) -transitive separable (object pronoun can only come between the verb and particle, an object noun can come either between the verb and the particle or after the particle) -transitive inseperable (both the object pronoun and noun come after the particle) Phrasal verbs tend to be hard for students and therefore it would be good if phrasal verbs that are already taugt are used naturally during practice and conversation by the teacher. This way the students can become more familiar with them. I think this is not only a good idea for phrasal verbs but can be applied to anything the teacher has taught already.
