Unit 15 discusses ways and reasons we evaluate students. There are three ways in which a teacher can evaluate a student such as, tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tutorials can be done as a whole group or with individual students to address specific difficulties they're having with English. Students can also be asked to evaluate the course. They can express what works well for them and what doesn't. the students can also communicate if there is too much on one skill being and not enough of another skill. When it comes to using tests as an evaluation method, there are five types that can be used. First you have placement and diagnostic tests. These are usually given at the beginning of the school year or when a new student arrives to the school. They can be used to determine the entrance level of the student, as well as, what the student actually knows. This information can be useful to develop lesson plans and materials to be used by the teacher. Progress tests are generally used throughout the term to determine which information has been retain versus information that has been forgotten. This helps teachers create a review plan for the students. External examinations are tests given outside of the school and are accompanied by a certificate of proficiency when successfully passed. For example, TOEIC, TOEFL, and Cambridge Assessment tests. Some of these test have a broad range of proficiency while others are more focused. Practice tests are used to prepare for the external exams listed above. There are some schools that will determine test types and testing times for you and some schools leave those decisions up to the teacher.
