Teach English in DongfAng Jiedao - Shantou Shi
In this unit I learned possible methodologies to employ and problems to anticipate when teaching beginners, individual students, children, business people, monolingual classes and multilingual classes. There are several categories of beginners to consider, including absolute beginners, false beginners, and several others, although these categories are not mutually exclusive. In general, when teaching beginners a teacher must be aware of the different students' needs, give instructions that are as simple as possible, and adapt to the situation. In teaching individual students through one-on-one lessons, there is no group dynamic to leverage, but this arrangement allows for the maximum adaptability to the student's specific needs and interests. When teaching children, a teacher should speak slowly in short and direct sentences and incorporate simple games to engage students in a fun way. As for discipline with children, one needs to be consistent, not raise one's voice, never threaten or inflict physical violence, and not exceed the code of conduct of the institution. For business people, it is especially important to conduct a needs negotiation with the clients, so that the content of future lessons can be prioritized to address the clients' specific needs. For example, a group may need to give presentations in English, and thus more focus can be put on presentation skills and the language used to carry out this function. Multilingual classrooms off an advantage in that by necessity the only language of communication between students will be English. On the other hand, in monolingual classrooms, students will likely share the same kinds of difficulties with English.
