Teach English in Chengnan Jiedao - Shantou Shi
Unit two is designed to begin reviewing basic grammar and English sentence structure. We covered nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, definite and indefinite etc. Despite the fact that I have a college degree in the Humanities I find it interesting that grammar and sentence structures is still challenging. Especially coupled with the fact that I am being quizzed on the information provided. Some of the unit that I was actually not very familiar with were Gerunds, which are verbs that can be any of three things in a sentence; subject, verb or object. Even things like countable and uncountable nouns I still have to think about it. For example, the word 'road' in a sentence is a noun and it stumps you because you think well... you could actually state how many roads in a sentence but it is probably referring to the length that the 'road' is, not how many there are. Some sentence structure also just comes naturally because it has been en-grained in us over years of learning English that we actually 'forget' what the words are sentence structure wise, we just simply know that it should be written or pronounced a certain way. Another challenge is not to be too hard on yourself when refreshing and relearning certain areas in the English language because it is your first language. Reminding oneself that no one recalls it all and our language is very complicated is probably a wise idea and reduces the level of stress that goes along with learning. Hopefully I will constantly remind myself while taking this course and when teaching in a classroom setting that this can be fun, life is constantly about learning and I am going to do great! Just like the students are going to do great!
