Why complete a Tefl course Gaining a TEFL qualification is not an easy thing to do. It requires hard work and consistent study. Given that it is possible to teach english abroad without a TEFL qualification, why bother getting one? Simply being a native english speaker does not make you a good english teacher. Teaching is a skill in itself, and the TEFL course provides a solid grounding in all of the skills and techniques you need to be an excellent english teacher. The course teaches you how to plan a lesson, how to ensure your teaching is at an appropriate level, how to manage classes of different sizes and ages, and how to use different techniques to help non-english speakers learn the language quickly. The TEFL approach to lesson planning is particularly interesting and useful. By dividing the lesson into three stages Engage, Study, Activate the lesson remains interesting for the students. It also has a natural, progressive flow, and maximises students chances of internalising new grammar and vocabulary learning. This style of running a lesson is further developed so that the three stages can be used in a non-linear way. The advantages of this are that it keeps the students alert and engaged throughout the course, which of course improves their chances of retaining their new knowledge of english. The course provides a firm foundation in english grammar. This is something lacking from many english peoples schooling, but it can be extremely helpful when trying to help a non-native english speaker understand the underlying patterns and structure of the english language. Having these skills makes you more confident as a teacher. Aside from the benefits in improving your ability to teach, completing a TEFL course has a number of personal benefits for the teacher. Firstly, having a TEFL qualification makes you more competitive in the english-teaching marketplace. Although it is possible to teach english abroad without a formal qualification, having a TEFL certificate means that you are able to secure a better post. For younger teachers who have not yet developed a career, working abroad as a TEFL teacher makes for a more attractive CV/resume. For many people who decide to study for a TEFL qualification, TEFL provides a practical way to live and work in another country, or even several countries. They say that travel broadens the mind, and travelling for a significant length of time, rather than for two weeks as a tourist, means that you can really get to experience the culture, meet people, and hopefully make new friends. If you are keen to learn a foreign language yourself, getting a TEFL qualification and then living in the country whose language you wish to learn can be a great way to make quick progress. Being a language student as well as a language teacher can also help you to empathise with your own students! In short, although it is by no means an easy task, completing a TEFL course gives you an excellent foundation from which to become a first-class english teacher, while at the same time providing you with an opportunity to develop an attractive CV, and see the world.
