Volunteer TeachingA lot of people studying a TEFL course are doing so to endeavour to begin teaching as a new profession or career. Some people may wish to have this qualification so that when they are travelling, they have the option to work. Having a tefl certification whilst travelling can be quite useful when travelling to 3rd world countries, as a lot of the time the position may be volunteer teaching. Volunteer teaching can be in a range of different of different locations or areas, a very common one would be to teach in Orphanages. Obviously organisations such as these run on donations so taking payment for teaching english should not be an option. Volunteer teaching can be a very rewarding experience, more rewarding than being paid for your work. In my travels I have been to many 3rd world countries and have seen many situations where resources, schooling, housing, medical care etc all are really scarce. Being able to assist and do something like teach someone a new language can have the potential to change their life. You may also find that because learning english is not really an option for a lot of people, if they are presented with the opportunity they are quite enthusiastic and dedicated to learning. In a country such as Mexico, if you don't have the option to put your child into private schooling, they must attend public schools. There is usually a limit on students in each school and the eduction level can be quite low, so some students have to miss out on schooling all together. Teaching unfortunate children english can give them hope and a new chance for their future. They may be able to study abroad or get a job with international conversing, or it may just overall boost their confidence. There are many established organisations in various countries around the world that offer the chance for people to teach english on a volunteer basis or work in orphanages etc. Generally if you would like to volunteer you are required to pay a sum of money that covers a donation to the organisation as well as accommodation and food for you during your stay. These kind of opportunities are once in a life time and very beneficial as you get the chance to live with a local family, eat local food and interact with local people everyday. It is definitely not taking the touristy option for travelling. Generally in these situations you do not live in a hostel or hotel, but rather a family. This is both interesting and beneficial for you as you get the chance to what life is really like from a locals point of view. Holidaying in a city can be quite a different experience than living as the locals do. 463 Overall, I think if you have the opportunity after completing a TEFL course, you should have at least one experience teaching on a volunteer basis. Using any skills you have to help the unfortunate is very rewarding and can open your mind to many different, new ideas and experiences.
