Discipline in the classroomTeachers believe in different kinds of discipline. They could have a disciple plan, dos and don?ts and be strict in implementing them. However, you can have whatever kind if disciple plan you want, the question that needs of to be answered is, how effective is it? My research is about classroom discipline. When I was growing up I remembered my elementary years, I had a very a strict teacher that did not do much, but to scold her students. I know it was a long time ago but, it did have an effect on me whenever I view teaching and discipline, I still get that thought on which is more valuable as a teacher. What is the most effective discipline? Is there a standard discipline for all types of students? The Budget Macquarie Dictionary explains as follows: training to act in accordance to rules, a branch of instruction or learning, to bring to a state of order obedience by training and control. Discipline in my opinion is given in school. In school students experience warmth welcome, encouragement, understanding, love and discipline. This is where they should experience maintenance of molding their attitude. Let?s start with the classroom, we make our classroom beautiful because we want as teachers to give our students the camaraderie to learn all things that they need to learn. And we give them the most comfortable place for learning. Second, teachers make themselves tidy and they talk to the students respectfully, so that the students will imitate them. Discipline is something that teachers do for the students, not to them. (Albino Dsouza) We teach students to be responsible in our class and do their responsibility as students. We teach our students to take part in the class to get a smooth functioning learning environment. I came across this article and the writer wrote, ?Some teachers? practices in thailand usually mistakenly link classroom discipline to loss of temper. I also experience watching a teacher beat up a kid and encourage me to do the same. I feel bad for the kids that have to endure that kind of discipline. When that teacher told me that I could hit the kid, I said? not in a million years.? According to Thailandteaching.asia ? One of techniques of a better classroom management is modeling. It also mentioned about what the saying goes ?Values are caught, not taught.?Teachers who are prompt, courteous, enthusiastic, in control, patient and organized in their work provide examples to the students for their own behavior. If you are expecting the students be quieter in the classroom, you should also be quiet when you check on the work of the students. Like that teacher who was disciplining her student by hitting, I don?t think the students will not repeat the same behavior. As Teachers we have to cover two things, one to teach the curriculum given by the school and two is to promote order and limits in responding to disruptive behavior. (Doyle,1986 cited in Porter L. 2000 on page 5). The role of the teacher changes from culture to culture. In Asian society the teacher has the highest authority and always respected whilst in western culture teacher acts like a facilitator. (Porter L.2000) According to the Authoritarian theory the role of the teachers is to arrange conditions to alter the rate behavior and in process establish order. According to democratic theory the role of a teacher is more to my agreement wherein we have to encourage student self-responsibility, promote student growth and development, facilitate learning, relate warmly and nourish curiosity. (Porter. L. 2000) We as teachers need to establish trust, communication as well as be helpful, interesting and trustworthy. (Charles, C.M. 2002) Discipline is probably the first concern of every teacher. Some of us would appreciate a few rules and be strict in the classroom. But for me when I walk in the classroom, I would always look at the things that are done wrong. If they said: ?Good Morning? properly. If they write on their desk, if they are talking and if they are eating in the classroom. We noticed things that are not done correctly. My idea is, if you have set of rules in the classroom that is great! But you need to make some room of improvement for your students. They might be late sometimes, and they could get a pink card from you (detention). They might misbehave sometimes. But WE as EDUCATORS need to continue reminding, correcting and loving them.
