Teach English in Dapuqiao Jiedao - Shanghai Shi
Course ExperienceHaving had no prior teaching experience, Ive decided to take an online tefl course to give myself more career options. The economy has been a concern for quite a while now and it just seems like a good idea to try to gain as much experience and qualifications as possible. Even though I currently have a temporary job and Im about to go into a permanent position soon, I still dont regret taking this course. I dont think Ive learned this much about the english language when I was in school. Im not sure about schools in the United Kingdom, but from my experience and from what I hear, it is rare for teachers in the united states (or maybe just New York?) to get into the grammar aspect of english in classes. Instead, we are told to read many books like The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, some of Shakespeares works, etc. We were supposed to reflect on our feelings, the symbolic meaning of items or actions in the book, metaphors, similes, etc. I think I only recall one year where we actually focused on vocabulary and grammar, which was my second to last year of high school. This was mainly because most of us had to take the SATs during the time. I believe that most schools should try to implement education in grammar and vocabulary early on so that students are better prepared for occasions like taking the SATs and other exams. Not only that, but I think it would help students become more sophisticated in their writing in the future, which would help them provide better college and job prospects. Based on what I learned during this course, what TEFL instructors teach students is more relevant to learning the many nuances of the english language than what I learned the past 20 years when I was in school. As I said in the Unit 20 assignment sheet, taking this course made me a better english student and hopefully, it will help make me a better teacher too. It is apparent that an online course would not provide the same benefits as an on-site course, where you would be in an actual classroom setting. Being in an actual classroom setting would set a more realistic atmosphere for soon-to-be TEFL teachers. The potential teachers may even have to simulate teaching a few classes, which I actually did not have much of an opportunity to try out. But given the circumstances, I took the online course since it was more convenient for my current job and school situation. But if nothing held me back and I was given the choice, I would love to go abroad to obtain my TEFL certificate. I would get more of a realistic hands-on experience and I think I would be doing a great thing for myself. Perhaps one day, if given the right circumstances, I may take up my friends offer to go work for him at Aston english, or the school that he is beginning to open up in China. Completing the TEFL course with ITTT has been an accomplishment for me and I am pleased to know I was able to make it by the deadline. Again, I must thank you, Peter, for being so helpful and understanding during my time with ITTT. Ive enjoyed this course immensely and I look forward to moving on to my supplementary course. I believe I will be doing the young learners supplementary course as I find such joy in teaching children. Ive had prior experience teaching swimming to mostly children at a previous job, which gives me reason to believe that I would enjoy teaching english to children in a foreign country also.
