business englishEnglish has become one of the most globally used languages. It ranks within the top three of all the spoken languages in the world. Its international use can be through its adoption and use by international industries, for example aviation. Air traffic controllers at airports all across the globe use english as the main language of communication. This means not only do the air traffic controllers use english, but pilots also must learn and speak english as well. Academia (i.e. schools, research papers, etc.) and many media outlets also use english to quite an extent. Aside from its universally functional use, english also has a form that may perhaps have a more influential use in the world-Business english. Business english is an important form of english that plays a crucial role in promoting and enhancing the functioning of international business. Business english have various forms when used in different mediums in business, it has its own form and style, and although the global economic market has been weakened as of late, there is a great demand for it as businesses originating from non-native english speaking countries expand into english speaking markets in the weakened global economy. Similar to how air traffic controllers and scientific research has its own vocabulary and style, business english also has its own form. Business english has many mediums where different styles of business english must be used. For example, contracts are written with very specific legal wording, emails and letters are written in polite, concise, and respectful tones, and phone conversations are held with relaxed, amicable, yet objectively driven verbiage. Its complicated nature makes it challenging for both native english speakers and non-native english speakers alike. Although similar in grammar and vocabulary as layman english, business english is somewhat different. Business english uses a tone that is more formal and uses different verbiage to convey a more polite and professional form of english. For example, when writing letters, emails, and other documents, the use of ?Mr.? and ?Ms.? as well as ?Sincerely? and ?Regards? must be used, otherwise the tone of writing becomes too relaxed and loses its professionalism. Proper spelling and punctuation are extremely important as well. Misspelled words and improper grammar give a very strong impression of sloppiness and carelessness, which communicates an impression of unreliability. Another example would be phone conversations. An improper use of vocabulary can very easily give the listener the completely wrong impression of both one?s own self and their company, resulting in the refusal to do business or even a complete misunderstanding of the company altogether. The desire for business english is in high demand. Although the world is experiencing considerable economic turmoil of late, growth is still occurring for companies that are successfully thriving. Some of these companies are located in non-native english speaking countries. Some examples are countries such as China and japan, which are expanding into the united states and Europe. As the online UK Guardian reports, ??chinese businesses are taking advantage of cash-strapped eurozone nations to gain a foothold. ? a group of chinese manufacturers hope to get the green light to develop a ?50m (£40m) plot in Athlone, central Ireland and begin transforming it into what local papers have dubbed Beijing-on-Shannon. Similar plans are under way in Greece, which along with Ireland has been the worst hit by the credit crunch and financial crisis.? (Mattioli, D.) And more recently, The Wall Street Journal Online reports, ?japanese clothing chain Uniqlo is opening its first West Coast location as parent Fast Retailing Co. rolls out its plan to open hundres of stores in the U.S., even as American retailers are retrenching.? (Inman, P. et al) With such expansion occurring now, business english can be considered to be in great demand more than ever. english has become one of the most important mediums of communication in the world. It is used in the transportation industry as well as other industries that link countries and people together. Business english has also become an important medium of communication as well. Although it difficult due to its several styles within itself, based on the form of communication, it is nonetheless one of the languages in great demand within the business sector.
