Reading and listening is one of the four basic skills in any language. The reasons for reading and listening can be divided into two categories, for a purpose and for entertainment. Readers and listeners understanding of the context when reading and listening depends on their predictive skills, when searching for specific information, to get a general idea, to get detailed information and deduction from context. Some ways of approaching language difficulties include, pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of texts. Choosing materials that interest/motivate students, building interest before reading/listening, varying the type of material and using the material to practice different skills are some basic keys to successful receptive skill lessons.
