I can easily see how direct and reported can get confusing for nonnative english speakers. You relay the exact same message both ways yet it is crucial to do it in the correct way to the situation. all the conditional forms are also rather complex, mixed and second are quite similar and challenging for me to differentiate.This is the first time I have been introduced to phonetic script. My gut feeling is that I will use this information as and when needed in class. I believe is will be quite intimidating to show this a a ESL student who may not have the required mouth muscles or control to create the sounds in order to interpret the script.
