In this unit we learned about the four basic skills in any language, focusing on the receptive skills: Reading and listening. We read and listen for entertainment or for a purpose, like learning something new. When we read or listen we also have to use our minds so we can process the new information using our pre-existing knowledge to understand the whole idea. As teachers, we have to encourage our students to develop their understanding skills giving them some tools, like teaching them some of the complex vocabulary of a text, but letting them figure out what the whole text talks about and discover the meaning of new words by themselves.
