Pronunciation is often cited as the most difficult area for those learning English. This is because English is oftentimes not pronounced like it's spelled, getting a mouth to adjust to making new noises can be tough -- especially for adults, and intonation can be difficult to hear (a challenge that faces most new learners, regardless of the language. Understanding and implementing the phonetic alphabet is an incredibly useful tool for teaching pronunciation. When and how to teach pronunciation is really up to the instructor. My preference is to have time specifically devoted to pronunciation as it becomes relevant with new vocabulary.
