The past tenses in the English language are used to express actions that occur in the past and are simple present, present perfect, present continuous, and present perfect continuous. The simple present describes completed past actions and is helpful in describing ordering actions. Past continous described those actions that were in progress at a specific point in a past time. The past perfect describes those actions that have happened (completed) before another past action while the perfect past continous tense describes/expresses a duration (continuity) of a longer action that happened in the past that was before another past action.
