This unit focuses modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modals are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. Modals can be used to express a number of different ideas and differing degrees of formality. There are two voices used in English, the active voice and the passive voice. Only transitive verbs (verbs followed by an object) are used in the passive voice. A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. There are 3 groups of clauses, independent clause, dependent clause and relative clause. Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs, consist of a verb plus one or two particles.
