Reading and listening are receptive skills. People perform these skills for two broad reasons: reading/listening for a purpose and reading/listening for entertainment. Often these two motives get intertwined, and that's okay. It is not enough to just recognise words. We need to be able to process those words in our minds to gain true understanding. Readers and listeners employ a number of skills such as predicting from headlines, scanning for specific information, and deducing. One of the problems in teaching the skills of listening and reading is selection of topics. They need to be of interest to as many of the students as possible.
