This lesson talked about the types of materials that a teacher can use including authentic materials such as articles and news reports, created materials such as activity sheets created by the teacher, and course text books which come in all levels and styles. Teachers should be careful using authentic materials with beginner students because the language can prove to be complex for students with limited vocabulary, but these types of materials are encouraging and engaging for students with a high English level. Authentic materials can address a whole range of topics and can bring up vocabulary and grammar that is new and stimulating for students. Created materials can be useful for addressing very specific topics and praciticing specific skills. Text books can be helpful as a resource for teachers because they provide a tried and true, and organized way of teaching materials. Usually text books also cover equally skills, grammar, and vocabulary and can help provide the teacher with a basis to plan lessons off of. Teachers should always be conscious of their students' culture and needs when using materials and pick what will be most appropriate.
