In this unit I have learnt about the basics of different learning methods and theories, such as Grammar-Translation Method, Task-based learning method, Audio-Lingualism and so on. The unit also pointed out the merits and demerits of each learning method. This was particularly useful because it allowed me to reflect on which theories are best used in modern teaching methods. For example, based on the country in which students learn English, certain theories will be more effective than others. In countries, such as Japan, where there is a strong focus on grammar-translation, it becomes evident that students' general fear towards speaking the language comes from the fact that they are focuing on perfect language structures instead of spontaneous output. In such cases it is better to find a language theory and method, such as task-based learning or Presentation, Practice and Production methods for the students to realize that English is a useful and accessible language. Different lesson outlines where also introduced with thorough explanations of the different parts of the lesson as well as activities which could be done during those lesson stages.
