Productive skills include writing and speaking. Writing is often overlooked by instructors, since it typically involves \"quiet time,\" but is nonetheless just as important as other types of language skills. While writing tasks usually focus more on accuracy, speaking tasks usually focus on fluency. Both fluency and accuracy are important skills and one is not more important than the other. When attempting to get students engaged in production activities, it is important to keep in mind the different backgrounds of the students. Some students may be discouraged from participating for various reasons, including age, gender, cultural background, or the topic of speech or writing. Pair work and group work are helpful for allowing quieter students to produce speech without feeling the pressure of speaking in front of the entire class. Similarly, students may find it less stressful to repeat new words and phrases as a group so that individual mistakes will not be as salient. Rather than pointing out all mistakes as they occur, the most common mistakes throughout the class should be corrected afterward so as not to make individual students feel ashamed.
