Unit 5 discusses important aspects of classroom management such as classroom arrangement, developing rapport with students, and the effective use of eye contact, gesture, and voice in the classroom. The grouping of students may be dictated by the class size, available space, and the type of activity. There are pros and cons for whole-class grouping, pairwork, groupwork, and students working alone. It is important that the teacher strikes the correct balance between teacher talking time and student talking time, to allow sufficient exposure to natural, correct English while providing opportunities for active participation. Instructions should be given using simple, consistent language with the aid of visual clues. Establishing rapport between the teacher and students is integral to creating a successful and enjoyable class experience. Maintaining classroom discipline depends on various factors such as class size, age of students, and motivation for learning. The wealth of information in this unit was particularly useful to me since I have no teaching experience. I learnt many techniques for classroom management which I am eager to put into practice.
