Unit 20 covers the potential issues you may run into within the classroom. This varies from what to do in the first lesson to dealing with large classes and everything in between. The most common issues you may run into in an ESL classroom, is varying levels. This can be easily solved in a number of ways, from how you assign work to how you allow the students to interact. In some classrooms you may pair beginners with more experienced students, which allows each student to use their own skills, as well as interact with other students. This issue can also be approached by separating the two levels and giving them different or slightly easier/harder work. When using this approach it is a good idea to make sure all students are working on similar subject matter so that the class does not become too segregated. Native language within the classroom is a common and difficult issue to deal with. You may start to notice an increase in native languages when students become bored or confused. It is the teacher's responsibility to keep the class on track and explain all instructions clearly in order to keep students practicing their English as much as possible.
