Unit 12 covers productive skills: speaking and writing. In this unit, we learn that when focusing on accuracy (usually during the study phase of a lesson), correction is helpful to students. However, when focusing on fluency (usually during the activate phase of a lesson), correction does more harm then good. This unit discusses the importance of creating an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and can grow in confidence, and gives suggestions for how to go about doing this. I learned a lot from this unit, especially the part about route repetition during the study phase, and how students may be coming from a language that doesn't have punctuation or spaces between words. I thought the suggestions for creative writing activities were interesting and different, and I could see how pair work for these kinds of activities could really get students talking and practicing English. I had always thought being able to speak and understand was more important than being able to read and write, but I see now how, especially for business students and adult professionals, writing and reading are just as important as speaking and listening.
