Unit 12 taught me about how to teach ESL students the productive skills: speaking and writing in English. This lesson reminded me that writing in English is different from speaking it (more formal), and requires understanding the culture of the host country (British English, American English, Australian English, etc) to know which dialogue of English to use. Some of the things that stood out to me were the definitions and important factors that teachers needed to know in order to plan successful writing and speaking lessons. Some of these definitions/factors included the knowing of punctuation, spelling, and penmanship for writing-based lessons, and how to find and excite the students in topics for speaking-based lessons. Other factors included how to incorporate games into lessons to help encourage student talk time, and practice fluency based objectives. Some of the games I loved to play when I was a kid that were on the list included: hangman, miming, and tick-tack-toe, which helped me to remember vocabulary, and how to use them in day-to-day life. This lesson was a great review, and I learned how best to teach students to speak and write in English.
