Many different language learning methodologies have contributed to the formation of current TEFL methodology. One of the best TEFL models is the ESA model that includes three distinct phases of a lesson - Engage, Study, and Activate. During the Engage stage, the teacher is trying to involve all the students and get them interested in the lesson. The goal is for all students to speak some English. Correction from this phase should be saved for the Study phase. During the study phase, the new language topic or structure is introduced. This phase may include explanation and controlled practice of this new topic as students learn and practice the new language structure. Once the students have a basic understanding of the new language, they can practice it more freely and fluently in the Activate stage. In this stage, the students should be allowed to creatively combine previous knowledge with the new topic and to practice using it in real life situations (dialogues, brochures, etc.). A good balance of correction and encouragement from a teacher are important to help students understand their progress and stay motivate to keep experimenting and learning more.
