I've learnt about common ways of testing and evaluating students. I've learnt about progress, diagnostic, practice, placement, and proficiency tests. placement or level tests are used to place students in an appropriate class level. In these tests, all four skills (productive and receptive) are tested. Placement tests are also usually progressive and start with questions that are easy and progressively get harder. Diagnostic tests are used to identify a student?s current strengths and weaknesses. This can help while planning lessons by providing information on gaps in knowledge and what still has to be learned. In progress tests, all four skills are tested and are often required by the school or language centre. Practice tests are usually used for revision purposes and can be used for internal and external exams. There are numerous external proficiency tests such as general English exams; most well known is the Cambridge suite of examinations. There are also five different levels of these exams: 1. KET(beginner) 2. PET(elementary) 3. FCE (upper intermediate) 4. CAE (advanced) 5. CPE (proficiency). Other external exams include the TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS.
