Unit 11 centered on reading and listening, specifically, how to cultivate these skills in the classroom. The most fascinating thing I learned from this lesson is that reading and listening are not simply a matter of using our ears and eyes; rather, we must use our minds to process the words in our pre-existent knowledge to fully comprehend. Readers and listeners use specific skills when reading and listening such as: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction from context. The teacher should pre-teach difficult vocabulary and carefully select texts that elicit the interest of the students in order to minimize the problems with listening and reading.
