Unit 11 talks about teaching the receptive skills: reading and listening. First, I have learnt that the four basic skills of any language are (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and they are equally important and teachers have to focus on them in a balanced way. Second, we listen and read for a purpose, entertainment or both. Third, I have also learnt that reading and listening have certain skills that my learners should perfect like predicting, skimming and scanning. Finally, there are many ways to solve problems with reading and listening such as pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts and topics, creating interest and providing good tasks like jigsaw reading.
