A teacher's first lesson is an important time to establish rapport, learn about the students in the class, discover student's English aspirations and find out English levels. Classes may be existing groups that are comfortable with each other or they may be new groups that need introductions to their classmates as well as the new teacher. Warm up activities like hangman or get to know you activities like pass the ball are effective ways to establish rapport on the first day and provide an engaging start to the class. If there are students at different levels, pairing weaker students with stronger students can help. Group work, repetition and worksheets can help manage large classes.
