A teacher can use authentic and created materials. Authentic is anything that a native speaker would hear or read and are interesting for students, build confidence and can be aimed at the interests of a particular group of students. Created materials are designed by the teacher (or someonelse, but the teacher has permission to use them) and can be used to replace or supplement the course book. Course books have advantages and disadvantages. Advantages are: -easier for the teacher who doesn't need to prepare lessons from scratch -at a level that is suitable for the students -balanced mix of skills, grammar and vocab -continuity and progression, and continually practices language previously introduced Disadvantages are: -doesn't always fit the specific needs and interest of students -may not cover enough language problems students from specific countries have -course books dicate what is to be taught. lessons may become less student centered and some things students need to learn might not be covered (as fully as needed) -exclusive use of the book can become boring and predicatble and can make teachers lazy and stop them from having motivating materials besides the book The main thing I learned from this lesson is the importance of extra materials besides the course book. To keep things interesting for students and to focus on problems students encounter. This is an option for a teacher to more in depth teach things that are difficult and keeping the lessons student-centered instead of book-centered. The teacher can omit parts of the book, replace it by better suited materials, add extra materials next to the book or adapt the book in a way that fits better for the class.
