Teach English in Shuitou Zhen - Qingyuan Shi

Unit 10 included two videos of the same teacher teaching the same group of students; however, video 1 was a bad example of a class lesson and video 2 was a good example. In video 1, the instructor did not explain the language point, used complex grammar terms that the students could not understand or recognize, and intimidated the students by continuing to say it was \"very easy\". Whereas, in video 2 the teacher explained the concept easily for the students to understand by giving examples and started out with a great warm-up/\"Engage\" activity (brainstorming animals). After brainstorming animals the students knew already, he prompted them to shout out new animals to add to the list (on the board) by miming animals and showing them flashcards of animals. In video 2 he also paired up the students, which was much more effective and less intimidating than having them work individually (as he had them do in video 1). Lastly, he gave them a time limit for each activity and went around the room to see if they needed help or had any questions, rather than reading a book on his own, as he did in video 1. One last important point is that he started off the class by building rapport and getting to know the students' names rather than awkwardly asking them what their names were in the middle of the class. In my opinion, it is important to build that connect with the students from the very beginning of class in order to influence the mood and atmosphere of the classroom for the rest of the class or even entire course. In conclusion, it was very interesting to discover the differences between the two videos and to see how much of an impact a teacher's attitude and teaching style can have on the class.
