Teach English in SAnkeng Zhen - Qingyuan Shi
This unit shows the importance of lesson planning and how effective a teacher can be when he/she is prepared for the lesson. Also the knowledge of how to teach effectively and using the ESA method had a profound effect on the students. In the first lesson, you can tell right away that the teacher wasn't prepared or wasn't interested in teaching. He was also intimidating and forcing answers from the students that he could've explained first before trying to elicit a response. The students tried their best to respond but was a bit afraid to give the wrong answer. The teacher was just giving worksheets after worksheets with little explanation and was even rude to read a book while they were answering the worksheets. In the second lesson instead, he was welcoming and smiling and did all the right things, he introduced himself, he learned the names of his students. To elicit a response from his students, he used mimes and gestures, he engaged the students by starting with animal vocabularies they know and added some more. He used pictures to elicit more response. He followed his plan, which was a straight arrow lesson. He introduced the verbs in connection to the animals to introduce the modal auxiliary verb can and can't during the study phase of the lesson, then he used drills and worksheets which he asked the students to do in pairs. Then during the activate phase, he asked the students to create their own animal and say what it can and can't do. And then he ended the lesson with a polite and warm goodbye and see them again the following week. I'd say if I am one of the students in the second lesson, I would've enjoyed it and would be motivated to learn. So he was an effective teacher.
