Teach English in Qinglian Zhen - Qingyuan Shi
Unit 11 Overview In this unit we learn about two types of receptive skills, which are Reading and Listening. There are different special skills that are needed for reading and listening successfully: Predictive skills: This type of skills allows us to predict the idea of the text. For example if we have a dialog we can predict the content from the headline. Scanning skills: We have to read or listen, and find out specific information only. Skimming: It is necessary to be able to generate the general idea, where we listen or read from a text and understand the general meaning of the text without reading every word. Detailed information: We must also be able to gather detailed information, or information that demands close attention. Deduction from context: Here we need to understand the meaning of individual words from the context we?re reading or hearing. Also, here learn that student interest in a topic holds so much power. When a topic connects to what students like to do, engagement deepens as they willingly spend time thinking, dialoguing, and creating ideas in meaningful ways. Finding student interests is a key learning technique. When the teacher plans the lesson focussing on learner?s interest it can help them see invisible concepts made visible. Finally, teachers should be sensitive to the words in a text by previewing the material before assigning it to students. It would be better to focus on something intermediate i.e. not too easy and not too complex but easy to understand and expose the students to authentic and non-authentic texts. The teacher needs to point to what the students know rather than what they don?t know when selecting authentic materials.
