We learn about reading and listening skills, which form two of the four basic skills every student has to use in order to learn a language. Whilst you might think it's just eyes and ears, the main components are the ability to recognise and understand the words as well as, the ability to understand the overall meaning in the context of the pre-existing knowledge of the world that each student possesses at the time. We all read and listen using various techniques such as scanning for specific information, skimming for the general idea, predictive skills, concentrated reading for detailed information and deduction from content. The unit also covers basic keys on how to effectively approach receptive skill lessons: The teacher has to get to know her students well in order to work out what they are interested in, so that she can choose topics her students find engaging and helpful in their learning. In larger groups, this might mean she presents varying topics over time, so that all students are catered for at some point. In the Engage phase, it is imperative to build interest in the topic prior to reading or listening. If the teacher finds it important to pre-teach vocabulary or parts of speech, this should take place prior to reading/listening and has to be approached at just the right level. It is important not to do too much as this might undermine the overall formation of the students' receptive skills set. Based on the material covered, in the Study phase the teacher should get the students to practise different skills whilst incorporating realistic comprehension tasks to aid understanding. Finally, the Activate phase ought to cover activities that lead naturally on from the reading / listening exercise.
