Teach English in Dongpo Zhen - Qingyuan Shi
Unit 19 provides an overview of the different groups teachers may need to teach, beginning with the different beginner groups and provides new teachers with tips on how to teach various groups. It outlines the special skills and psychology required for teaching absolute beginners including awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the students and stresses the importance of choral repetition, revision and homework. It provides solutions to potential problems. It deals with teaching individual students and provides a list of suitable activities for one-to -one instruction. The unit stresses the need for checking of facts before the lessons and advises that over-preparation is a safe option. A section on teaching children sets out some facts about younger learners and tips on how to deal with them through much repetition and careful, slow explanation and positive encouragement. Childrens? short attention span is noted and sets out the do?s and don?ts of lessons for children. It deals with discipline and classroom management and advises caution and self awareness and consistency. As teachers are in Loco Parentis they need to take responsibility for the children they teach. Business English or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is dealt with and an excellent needs assessment questionnaire is provided. The unit provides ideas about how to plan the program as well as mid term evaluation. It is comforting to read that the teacher is not expected to know about business, rather about English but it will surely help. In both monolingual and multilingual classes mother tongue language should be avoided but when students revert to it in pair work this is not a problem. Essentially the unit is reassuring and helpful.
