The unit sets out the basic rules governing modal auxilliary verbs, which are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. The modals include could, might, shall, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to and ought to and the unit out the different ideas they express and which are often confused. These include obligation, possibility, permission, ability and advice. A table sets out the different meanings of each modal and includes some that are not true modals. The unit makes clear the distinction between active voice and the passive, shows that the tense always remains the same in both voices. In the passive voice the auxiliary verb ?to be? indicates the tense is shown by the main verb. Again, the unit provides a table setting out the usage of tenses in passive formation. It makes clear that the passive is used when it is not clear who performs the action, either because it is not known or because we don?t wish to divulge the information. The unit further deals with the three categories of clause, independent clauses, dependent clauses and relative clauses. The be defining relative clause provides information essential to the sentence and the non-defining relative clause provides non-essential information. The unit sets out the three basic types of phrasal verbs or multi-word verbs which consist of a verb and one or two particles. A particle may be a preposition or an adverb or an adverb plus a preposition. They operate as one item. These include Type 1 intransitive verbs, Type 2 transitive and Type 3 transitive inseparables and the unit sets out the rules that govern them. Don?t be afraid of phrasal verbs, advises the unit, in the full understanding that these may well be frightening.
