Teach English in DamaishAn Zhen - Qingyuan Shi
Unit five laid out the necessities, complications, and logistics to managing the classroom and maintaining a positive balance between Teach Talk Time and Student Talk Time, and it established how these two elements can be effective in making the learning experience interesting and relaxing. This unit, beginning with the teacher's behavior listed the advantages to relying on eye contact and gesture as body language that can supplement Teacher Talk Time and can create an easier rapport and more relaxed classroom atmosphere. Then the unit went into detail on the ways a classroom and groups can be arranged for the three phases: Engage, Study, Activate. When it came to grouping, the advantages and disadvantages were established, mainly conveying that the three most vital aspects to any class activity are maintaining student interest, increasing student confidence and security with classmates and materials, and ensuring the teacher is able to effectively monitor the activities in a variety of ways, always being available if necessary. A very important aspect of this unit's lesson was the segment on maintaining discipline and the reasons for and ways to handle problem behavior. I found it informative that this lesson stated to focus on the behavior rather than on the student. This, to me, echoed the course's interest in keeping the classroom a safe, secure, and confidence boosting environment. Another singularly informative part of this unit was the part that dealt with classroom arrangement and how the simple difference between the horseshoe design and separate tables could not only be space-effective but could have a psychological impact on the students and could be a major part of establishing intimacy and rapport within the class.
