This unit was about making lesson plans, both why they are needed and how to write one. I have been teaching EFL in Japan since 2010. When I first started teaching, I had no clue how to write a lesson plan. I used to write incredibly detailed plans, scripting out difficult or important parts of the lesson. When I realized none of my co-workers were using my plans, I had a few years where I only wrote a brief memo about what was covered each class, teaching on the fly. I began a new job this year. When I applied, I had to have a demo lesson. I prepared a simple lesson plan. My demo went perfectly. My interview panel was blown away, my 7 years of experience showed. In a training seminar, my lesson plans were praised. I now always write a plan. Sometimes, I have surprise classes, or the schools might request a lesson I had not planned. I still find myself in the situation of teaching without a proper lesson plan. However, whenever I have a chance to have planning meetings with my Japanese co-workers, my organized lesson plans always impress them. For me, this unit reinforced something I already know to be important. More valuable for me were the materials for practicing lesson planning. Those were much higher level than I typically have taught in Japan. Right now, for the first time, I have one class of adults who have very high TOEIC scores. My first class, I grossly underestimated their ability. Fortunately, that plan was much longer than I anticipated needing--we covered absolutely every activity I had planned. I plan to keep a copy of the task 2 and 3 materials. I hope to move to Poland next year, I anticipate teaching EFL at a much higher level than I have in Japan. These materials will help me with future classes in Poland.
