By reading through this unit, I became aware once more that while most people would agree that listening and reading skills are equally important, we tend to overemphasise in our western culture the reading part (while in other cultures they would be stronger on listening, with culmination in nonliterate societies). Reading is easier to practice and it is also easier. The written word is consistent, you have time and opportunity to re-read passages you didn't understand immediately. On the other hand there is huge variation in spoken language through different dialects, speed or clarity of speech - and except for personal conversations and listening to recordings, there is little opportunity to relisten parts you didn't understand. All that makes me think again of how important it is, to be exposed to a great amount of spoken language if you want to learn a new language.
