Unit 1 provides an overview of: (1) the nine roles of a teacher, (2) the six main attributes of a good learner, (3) the differences between adult students and the three types of young learners, (4) the six stages of learning, and (5) the various motivations adult students have for learning. Reading this unit was a good experience for me, as I found that I often took on the various roles a teacher can have when I taught ages 2-7 last year. It was helpful to see the roles of teachers and students organized and classified. Now I have a checklist to compare myself to when I run out of ideas for a lesson or want to make sure I am doing everything I can to make the course go smoothly. This unit boosted my confidence in teaching older students in a classroom setting, as my only experience is with tutoring highly motivated adult learners, and teaching classrooms with ages 2-7.
