This unit talked about the differences between teaching with authentic materials, created materials and course books. Authentic materials involves anything a native speaker hears or reads and is useful for boosting student confidence and interest, but they are more difficult to understand and may be discouraging for beginners. Created materials are designed by the teacher and can be created specifically for their students in order to keep them interested and best help them learn. Course books are bought from a publishing company and have a written lessons and activities for the teacher to use, but they should not be solely relied upon because they are often outdated, rigid and broad. Course books do not provide enough details for the particular students. A good teacher knows how to properly balance authentic materials, created materials and course books for their students.
