This unit discussed the difference and importance of productive skills and the different methods of teaching each of these. The productive skills are speaking and writing, as opposed to the receptive skills of listening and reading. Like when teaching receptive skills, when teaching productive skills it is important to include multiple reasons for the students to want to use this type of communication. By making it purposeful, interesting, and fun, it is much more likely to be a successful lesson. You want to use two types of activities when teaching these skills, accuracy and fluency activities. Accuracy based activities will need to be more controlled or guided by the teacher to ensure correct use of language. Fluency based activities will be much more creative and not controlled by the teacher. Games are often good ways to encourage creative communication in a classroom.
