Unit two presented various theories regarding learning and language acquisition, and specified some methodologies that work best for for different age groups. There are three main learning theories: maturation, environmental, and constructivism. Maturation is the theory that there is a set path for growth based upon developmental stages regardless of environmental influences. Environmental theory states that our environment is the main influence on our learning. Constructivism is a fusion of maturation and environmental theory. The unit divided the overall group of young language learners into two. Five to nine year olds have shorter attention spans and gain more from physical activities. Nine to 13 year olds are developing the ability to think about abstract concepts and their attention span is expanding. For this age group one can begin to create lessons using the ESA method.
