In teaching English, the teacher has the options of choosing authentic materials or using non-authentic materials. Authentic materials are any type of media in English that is available and not designed specifically for EFL use. They come in a great range to provide variety, motivation, creativity, and confidence to the student. The downside is that the teacher will have to be careful to find appropriate material for the class lesson and level. Non-authentic or created material is material specifically designed for English teaching for each student level. They save time for the teacher preparing a lesson and are usually tested before publishing. Course books are the major non-authentic material teachers can use. They have their advantages and disadvantages. The best method is for a teacher to create a balance of both types of materials which maximizes their use for the students.
