Reading through the elements required to teach modal verbs, role play seems like a good way to get students to understand how to use modal verbs in everyday conversation. The lesson exampled a patient-doctor conversation, however there are many options. Role play discussions could be parent-child, teacher-student, waiter-customer. Different role play discussions would also improve understanding between a more formal (doctor-patient) or informal (brother-sister) conversation. A good study exercise would be multiple choice for choosing between defining and non-defining clauses or types of phrasal verbs. Reorganizing a sentence from active to passive would also be a good study exercise for students. Another way to help students to learn these modal verbs and phrases is to intersperse their usage throughout your lesson plans so that students become accustomed to hearing their usage.
